The Post #11 from AAA was back when I had a 190d 2.5 ,I remember that thread ,Ive now drive a 190d with a 2.2 and just sold my 5spd version .The 5 spd was a bit faster than the auto Im driving around now.
Heres a transplant Ive been considering ,one that would have the advantage of real classic with great economy .The car is a 80 380sl with a aerodyne package, it resides next to the house I rent and has some engine problems Ive been told .The 2.2 diesel would fit with little problem and the weight difference between both cars would be insignicant Im hoping.Anyone now the weight of this car? the 190E 16 valve had a .Cd of .32.. Which is pretty darn good. The only other car that beats that is the euro w124 Euro 300D with narrow tires which nets a .Cd of .28...

Found the info I was looking for on the weight of a 1980 380sl,4321 lbs,the 84 190d with a 2.2 weight was 3549 ,this is 772 lbs difference .The 2.2 diesel engine and trannie swap vs the 3.8 being taken out would bring things a bit closer to a comparable weight.Im guessing that 300lbs of fat with the transplant done would be the remainder .If I drop the US.bumpers for some euros and go after some aftermarket seats I should come real close to equal weight .It would be an intersting econo project ,a 380sl convertable / hardtop that gets 40 mpg hwy.

The rake of the sl design is low and sleek,better economy could be realized from this advantage also ,a set of 240d aluminium rims with caps to complete the look would go nice.If it reached 45 mpg hwy it wouldnt be a big surprise to me.Putting the hardtop on would end the windnoise and as far as the smell ,thats what we all love as diesel owners.

That must be the GVW. Actual weight of the sl should be from 3500 to 3700 I would think. Still a lot for a little 2.2 to drag around.
