Rear Axles

I just pulled the rear axles on my 1984 300SD.
There was a spacer on the right side but none on the left side.
Is this common or has the left side been left out by a PO?
It has had the axles replaced three or four years ago.
If I need a spacer are they a standard size or will I need to measure how thick it needs to be somehow?

If what you are referring to as the c-clip that holds the inner cv joint in the side gears of the carrier, then the answer is yes, they should have one on each side (accessible by r and r-ing the rear diff cover).

I think you are reffering to the spacers. Put it back together exactly as it was when you took it apart. These spacers are to compensate for manufacturing tollerance variations I believe. One side may have not needed one.

Check the oil seal on the differential case carefully. Maybe it stuck to the seal when you slid the shaft out.

Yes it is the spacer that goes on the end of the axle not the c clip that holds the axle in.
There wasn't one on the left side but I've not heard of anyone else not having one on each side.
I am sure it is just to take up clearance so the axle stub can't move in and out in the side gear but if it needs one I want to make sure it gets one.

I think you need to measure the end play of the side with the spacer, and then see how much more the other side has, then get a spacer for the difference.
I've got TONS of spacers, so let me know if you get a measurement and I'll ship you one.

Vsteck is right of course. My guess remains that there was just not one required or space for one at that location. Measuring as he stated is still best to be sure though.

These cars are so old that it is concievable that one was left out at an axle change at some point accidentally as well.

Great info guys.
I will check the end play today to be sure.
Hopefully there will be none or very little.
If not, I'll take you up on your offer John as soon as I can determine the size needed.
Thanks again for the help.
