What is this part? Picture attached

Found this part on the garage floor. I have been working on the '96 C220 (just the cabin filter) and the '95 E320 (new combination switch, so I had the drivers side/steering column/air bag, etc. all apart).

This part was sitting on the floor as I cleaned up Sunday night.

Any ideas? Could be from anything, not just cars are worked on here.

Thanks,

Clay

Did the combination switch come out in pieces?

My best guess is that it's part of a turn signal switch.

The combo switch did not come out in pieces.

It's one of the "new" state quarters, the date is on the back of the coin. Your age is showing........these quarters don't look right to me either.

I looked at the combo switch I took out very closely for any hints on where this may have come from. No joy so far.

Everything seems to be working fine after putting it back together so still a mystery.............

Good question. Now you got me looking through my spare change jugs. The newer quarters that represent each state have the date on the back side.

While looking through the quarters, I noticed one a little different. got my glasses on, and it is a gold colored dollar of Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President. I has no mint date on either side. It is just slightly larger than a quarter. First one I have seen and could be confused as a quarter.

Even as I was taking the pic I thought.............. I will probably get more comments on the quarter than the part.................

I sure hope it's off something else..................kind of involed, this changing of the combo switch thing

Gawd it looks sooo familiar. Something to do with the steering column. I keep wanting to say "ignition" switch, but that doesn't seem right... it might come to me.

I can "see" how it's installed, getting closer.

EDIT: it's definitely off your w124. Not that other thing.

I had to replace the lock cylinder a few months ago. Wonder if it came off there, and has just been waiting to fall out. Lock did not require removal of lower panel, but this job did. Maybe it was just sitting there?

Is it the thing that holds the sleve onto the lock to make it tamper proof, except in position #2?

Thanks, and keep thinking!

Clay

ya I am pretty convinced it has something to do with the cylinder. My '87 300d had broken stuff in that area, so I had it all apart. I had to replaced the aluminum column that the cylinder/lock assembly attaches to. I can "see" two(maybe, maybe not) of these things, one on each side. They/it has to be pressed down flush so you can slide something into something else.

I think I finally got rid of all the old broken parts, so I can't take a look at them. I think I recognize this part so well because, I had all the old stuff in the trunk. After I got rid of it all I kept seeing this little piece here and there. I may have ended up in my console, that is where all random stuff ends up.

The part I messed with the most was the part that contains the steering lock. It comes out in one big piece.

that sounds good to me. I would pull the sleeve off and have a look. It doesn't sound mission critical.

There is two of these in the ignition barrel and they are what hold the metal /tube anti theft cover on.

When you remove the ignition barrel your two bits of bent wire contact these and tug them in away from the cover freeing it up to be removed.

It will work well with just the one, because mine does as I like you found one on the floor mat.

It can just be clicked back into place but you have to go through the procedure of poking the two (or in this case one) bit of wire in to get the anti theft tube off

I love this forum!

Not mission critical on this part it seems, so I will have a look next time I have the dash apart, which could be years! Knock on zebrano........

Not exactly diesel related, but you can see the 240D in the background.

I am surprised that those retaining rings just fall out after an ignition tumbler replacement. From the original picture, looks like nothing is broken (MAYBE that notch right below the spring, but it looks like dirt to me). Btw nice shine on that wagon!
