How many miles.

Just for fun,

I know many of us diesel Benz owners have racked up miles in the 200,000 + range, and several are in the 300,000 range. But I would like to know if you have (or have had) a Diesel Benz in the 400,000, 500,000 (or beyond range)?

If possible, please tell us what model (W115, W123, W126, etc) How many miles, and if it is still on the road (if not, what became of it).

Again, this is just for fun and to satisfy a bit of curiousity

'83 300SD with 422k. The odometer worked when I first got it, then stopped. It was a rusty rusty mess, but ran very well. Also had about 6* of chain stretch. I sold it a few months ago.

Thumbs up

I recently saw an '84 SD at auction locally with 375k on it.

Forum member on here I considered a friend had 441k on his '86 300SDL before he passed away. His car had original bottom end, head had been off twice. Once for gasket, once to repair crack.

200-300k is common, past that is rare. Face it, at that mileage most cars are pretty much driven into the ground. Suspension is trash, interior is usually beat to death, climate system

My SD and SDL are in the 250k area. Hell my 300SEL has more miles at 275k. Not sure how well a 500k motor is going to run, to me it is basically going to be just about worn out.

My first MB diesel car was a 79 300td with 385k on a stooped odo ,the unknown mileage added from the sellers was somewere around 100k ,I put on an additional 65 k .It was just north of 500k when I sold it for $1000.Im sure its still putting around somewhere out their. My current 84 300cd has a stopped odo that I purchased that way, reads 256k,Ive put 75k miles on it in the last 3yrs ,its probably reaching the 400k zone real soon. You change the oil regularly and new filter and fluid for the trannie once a year your golden .Oh yeah ,the valve adjustments just a plus.

I don't have the car, but just for giggles I pulled an instrument cluster out of a 300CD that had 500K miles on it...and looked like it.

300D turbo was my DD for 9 years, parked and still runs great. Needs cosmetics, will sell cheap. Bought at 234 and now 417K.

Most dependable car I ever owned.

I found an 83SD for sale near me with 524K on it. odometer was flaky, so no idea of actual mileage, that was last year, and the customer I got it for is still driving it, and still having me service it.
I checked chain stretch and it was on 1° the PO said it was maintained by a good mechanic before she got it.
total rust bucket, but it's going strong.

My first Mercedes was a 1980 W116 300SD with 400,000 miles. I needed a car and bought it for $400 because it was cheap and I was very intrigued with the styling and the fact that it had a diesel engine, which I had been wanting so I could use biodiesel.

It was owned by a bus mechanic who got it from relatives who used it to pull their boat. It had a Mercedes-Benz Club of America decal on the window and a nice dash mat and carpets. He said that as far as he knew, the engine had never had major service, but that the transmission had been recently replaced.

It had a bad battery so I immediately spent $100 and bought a new Bosch battery. Shortly later the primer pump started to leak. I was told that the reason the heater didn't work was because the thermostat was bad, so I replaced it.

It ran great and had almost no smoke at idle. I loved the sound of the engine and the power that it had. When I had to make a 4-hour trip I could not believe that the fuel gauge didn't move from full! And that was back when diesel was less expensive than gasoline.

The interior was like new and nicely detailed. Overall, the car was very nice except for a cheap repaint from yellow to some silver/blue/green color and rust bubbles all over the body from the Utah salt.

I had Circuit City install a CD player, then took the car into a shop to have the air conditioning fixed because the windows didn't roll down. The A/C worked great, then quit the next day. The heater still didn't work.

I took off the door panels and found that the window regulators were bent. I removed the driver side regulator from the glass and used a piece of wood to hold the glass in place. One time when I was lowering the glass, it slipped, fell down, and shattered in the door. I called around and could only find one place with a used replacement window, and they wanted $150 for it. I ended up making one out of Plexiglass.

It was at about that time that I got overwhelmed with the car and sold it on eBay for $600. I missed the car but felt it was too expensive and difficult to repair; a rich man's car.

My second high-mileage Mercedes was a 1968 W110 200D with 592,000 miles on it. It supposedly had a rebuilt engine, but it didn't look like it was rebuilt, plus it leaked oil and smoked. I rebuilt or replaced almost everything mechanical and it became a great daily driver. I even drove it from Washington to Utah and back last summer and used it as my only functioning vehicle for two years.

The interior was in very good condition, and the body was rusty in the rocker panels, floors, and taillight area. Ultimately, the oil leaks got to be too bad and the smoking became obnoxious. I tried selling the car, but after $3,000 in new parts, I couldn't even get the $1,200 I purchased the car for back out of it, so now it is a parts car for my station wagon.

I now have a 1980 W116 300SD. The odometer stopped at around 300,000 miles but I have repaired it. The engine hasn't had any major work that i am aware of, but the transmission was on its last legs when I got it. The transmission is now replaced.

The interior was trashed and the paint is awful. The interior is looking a lot better, but it still needs paint. I've had to go through many things mechanically. I'm converting the power accessories to manual to make the car easier to maintain.

The engine almost never smokes and after turning up the ALDA completely, doing a valve adjustment, filter changes, etc., it has great acceleration.

My '82 300sd currently at 386,000 -fires quicker than any gasser I have ever owned, only uses oil when I cruise for long periods of time at 80mph -other than that, fine!

Look at my signature !!!

I have owned 300d's since my early 20's, other family members drive them as well.
When its a 50mile round trip to the nearest town/shop it doesnt take long to wind them on.
Mainly country miles.

Craig who is mainly in OD is hunting down my old 300d !! He will probably pass it as its no longer on the road.
I dont know if we have a million mile member with the original motor/trans.
When I took the old one off the road, it was using a pint of oil every 300 miles, had blow by like a steam trains stack, flared on most changes & the front end/steering had a mind of its own on the rough. The diff talked to me as well.
I had owed it since 14,000 miles.

My 300D is with me in VT this week (2000 miles from home), it's doing just fine. I recently installed both a reman engine and transmission, so I'm ready for the next few 100k.
