Emergency brake question
I've tightened the emergency brake due to looseness.
The brake will hold when the car is in neutral, but it will not hold if I shift into drive (when running). Is this normal or should I consider new shoes?

What exactly did you do to "tighten" the emergency brake?
If you just tightened the cable, you might want to remove the rear wheels and adjust the shoes themselves. Removing the rotors and doing a little cleaning and inspecting would be a good thing as well. Last edited by tangofox007; 06-08-2011 at 08:33 AM. |

The instructions in the FSM... I assume the ' chassis manual ' are very specific about the order of tightening stuff.... I need to do this on mine...
Listen to tangofox ....

Anybody know if w124 type parking brakes have that self-tightening feature (star ratchet) that when backing up and applying the brake while rolling, tightens itself?
Noticed my brake is not holding on a hill.

I've adjusted both parking brake screws. When engaged, the car now does not move (even in gear).
However, after I release the parking brake it still feels like it's partly engaged. I loosened them a few clicks, but the drag is still there. Ideas?

It was just a few more clicks to solution.
Thanks!

You can try that... but do not put too much hope into it on cars of this age ... a little rust or dirt or the springs stretched and that may not work... or may work unevenly side to side...
might as well put it up and hand adjust if you need them to work... or avoid all hills.....LOL
