Out with the old ('79 240D), in with the new ('76 300D)

My poor old 240 got torpedoed by a Hyundai Tiburon last week. The insurance people had the cash to me in just a few days, and I replaced it with a W115 ... a little older, a little rustier, but I think I like it.

Worse body, but a fresher engine. I think I've got some bad glow plugs though. It's hell to start on a cold morning and when it does light off, it sounds like it's being beaten on with a ball-peen, like it's dragging some dead cyls along. Almost zero blow-by, though, and takes over 20 seconds to kill the engine with crankcase pressure by plugging the EGR.

Sorry to see the dead W123...

It sounds like the glow plugs on the new car aren't working. Have you checked?

Good luck with the W115

Good looking 115 or is it a 114 I thought all 115s were 4 cylinder cars.

If it still has the loop plugs, swapping to the pencil style will make it start better but the old relay won't work.

Why does a 76 have an EGR and why would blocking it off shut the engine down?

Sorry, I mean the breather. You block it off with your thumb and when the crankcase pressure gets high enough, it shuts down the motor.

Got you. Do you still have the 408? Did you import it?

Still got it -- probably be living in it for part of this summer -- it's parked at our project house, where I'll be swinging hammers from dawn to dusk. Not such a great idea, that one. It needs quite a lot of body work -- specifically rust removal. I didn't import it myself -- bought it a couple years ago from the fellow who did. I haven't started it since last spring -- for a while there our fearless leaders required ethanol in all the gasoline sold in Oregon, and the tank has about four gallons of that stuff in it right now -- I have to drain it before I can do anything.

Lately I've been wondering if I might be able to fit a 4.5 in it! It's pretty slow with that little four-cylinder petrol motor in there. Although a 951 would be better if it would fit ...

If I am not mistaken, I believe that the W114s were gasoline, and the W115s were diesel (200D, 220D, 240D, and 300D).

Almost true. All W114's are 6 cylinder gas powered cars. W115 covered all diesel, and all 4 cylinder gas cars.
