Have you checked the basics like fuel filters and fuel tank venting? Does it run better with the fuel filler cap off?

When the engine is running - check the exhaust for flow, it maybe that the trap-cat in the centre of the exhaust system is blocked. This is usually coupled with very stumbly idle and an engine that will cut out as soon as revved. And wont start afterwards for about 2 hours - something to do with the crankcase pressure causing the pump not to inject fuel.

Ive gone down that road.

Have you tried an external fuel source higher than the lift pump?

How about a failed IP timer not advancing fuel delivery?

I'm not avoiding the shutoff question. I don't know if it's mechanical/vacuum like earlier Diesels in that body series, electrical/vacuum like other MB Diesels of that vintage, or electric fuel cut like later Diesels in that engine series. Someone will chime in.

The '95 E300 still has the mechanical IP, but it doesn't have the same "stop" lever as on the older OM60x diesels... that was replaced with a button on top of the fuel filter ass'y. So, there's probably no external visual cue as to what the shutoff pod is doing - a real shame, as that's very useful for troubleshooting an issue like this.

However, it does still have the good ol' vacuum shutoff pod like the older engines. I'd disconnect the vac line to the shutoff pod and see if that does anything. Next would be leaving the oil filler cap off while revving to see if there is excess crankcase pressure that is making the pod kill the motor (sounds extremely unlikely to me, but easy enough to check).

diesel fuel feed from a bottle and pump pushing it - see if it will rev, seeing you have eliminated all the air leaks.

Strange behaviour indeed but can be sorted out, What are the approximate rpms when it will auto shutdown?

Borrowing from the gsxr collection, this is a picture of a 602.962 pump (you're dealing with a 606.910) -

The shutoff actuator is the plastic turret bolted to the top of the IP. Some IPs have a metal turret with a nipple pointing out the side rather than straight up. What it looks like varies, where it is is constant.

Picture above - the vacuum shut-off valve is close to the "stop" sticker on the manual shut off lever; OM606 pump will not have that lever installed, but the shaft it attaches to is still there.

The fuel shut-off is on top of the main fuel filter (big metal filter) and you turn it clockwise to shut off the fuel.

My bet is on leaking o-rings in the fuel system; there are about seven of them. Air gets in, kills the engine and prevents the re-start. With time it works itself to a point that allows the fuel system to self-purge when you start, perhaps there is a hot/cold factor also at work.

Actually I count 8 o-rings (boxes with numbers around them are the locations).

3 each of 601 997 04 45, 5 each of 601 997 03 45.

Probably need to pull the intake manifold off to get clear access, which probably means more seals and brittle rubber bits will need to be replaced. Let us know if you go that route and need more part numbers!
