I have a 1984-300SD with 250K miles in running condition which had transmission rebuilt 6 months ago. The car is driven about 16 miles per day only as work commuting 5 days a week.
As I am planning to buy another car and sale this one, but I am more than sure that no one will pay me at least the price paid for the transmission rebuilt which cost me $ 2,300.00 in one those not expensive transmission shop in Texas. This car need some work done like AC compressor, some body work, and some little internal upholstery. Thinking this way, probably it will be worth sale it for parts or find someone who wants to get this car AC running and repair some body areas and seats upholstery. I do not have spare room to keep it as spare car and nether to wait for people looking for parts. I do have a 1982-300SD in which all parts from this 1984 car will fit properly but again I do not have space to keep parts as a mini junkyard. In face of this situation, what do you suggest as a practical and money wise option? Thanks. Nyko46

Is this the same SD in which you recently installed R134a and is not cooling especially well? To get an idea of value from the forum guys you will need to post pictures and give a list of what works and what does not along with mileage and all the things that have been recently replaced. Gut feel from your post is about $1000 which is less than the value of your rebuilt transmission.

X2 need pics to evaluate.
if only issue is seats and minor body work, you could be looking at a 2-3K price, but PICS PICS PICS... Tires? body work= Rust on these cars usually, not good. Engine condition?

Well Nyko, that is an unfortunate situation. We can't always salvage out of these older Mercedes what we have in them. You owned the car and it needed a transmission. Now you want to sell the car, and it is a bit tired and needs this and that and more, and nobody can see the value of the rebuilt tranny that lays under the car body. And still more to the point, the P & P yards really don't pay any more before the rebuilt transmission or after. They do pay much better though if you can drive the car to the yard. I just dumped my 94 Town Car and it was beautiful, ran good, A/C worked like new and was ice cold. Inside and out, everything looked great. Brake lines rotted out and it was going to cost me more to fix it then the car was worth, or at least equal to that and we said no way. So instead of selling it for $1500/$1700 we dumped it for $510.00. Got to make those difficult moves some times.

I have to agree 100% with you and have to say that your quote is very intelligent. There are many people and I am one of those that seem like to get married with these Diesel cars and do not want let they go for nothing. I have this car since 1998 which I bought on E-bay when I was in New York and I brought this car driving to Texas. Now, as you said, is time to say good by for this very used car. The reason for this thread was more to see how other guys think in a situation like mine. It seems that everyone get married with their old Mercedes and spend a lot of money to keep it working and expect to last forever. As I mentioned the car is in very good driving condition but with many things to be done and there we are in the situation where is not worth to spend money in a 1984 Mercedes Benz just to keep it running. I already spent $2,300.00 to have the tranny working but now, to keep this car, I will need to spend more money which is not worth to do. In the other hand, not one will pay for at least get back my money spent in the tranny. This is the reality and I should accept it. One more thing: I loved those Paul's words in Philippians 4:13 Have a great day.
