Anyone running an alternative air filter in their 85 CA?
I was reading this thread awhile back about using a WA8039 in a 85 CA 300D.
85 cali aircleaner filter Is anyone running the WA8039 or found anything else that would work. I need to get a new air filter and would like to not spend $50.

All I can do is add something DeliveryV's excellent detective work.
-The sides of the 'can' that the filter sits in, can be cut away and you can then use a larger filter. The CCV will require some re-plumbing, but it sucks in stock form anyhow. I have not found a filter, nor have I looked very hard. |

You have to replace the filter every what, 50,000 miles?

That is very optimistic as it depends on where you live; in some places your Filter is going to plug up sooner.
$45+ is too much for an Air Filter. Not a CA Car but I changed mine to a Washable Fram Air Filter and am saving money buy not having to buy Air filters. Washable Air Filter and Intake Mod , With Larger Breather http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=280376 Another Air Filter issue is if the oil mist from the Bolw-by contaminates it and shortens the useful life of the Filter.

You might want to question Deliveryvalve and see what he finally came up with.
If you look at Deliveryvalvs pic with the dimensions you see that a portion of the Plastic Cone would need to be drilled through and since the Filter Element is shorter something like a Foam Rubber Donut would be needed to seal it in the Stock CA Air Filter Housing. The problem area was what to do with the Crankcase Breather Hose that goes into the CA Air Filter Housing. It needs to be routed differently. Again no matter what Filter you use Oil mist from Blow-by will shorten the life.

If you wanted to retain your CA Air Filter but get a little more life out of it you could get an old XL Sweater and make yourself a Pre-filter to cover the Air Filter.
I did that to both the one on my Volvo and the one shown in the Pic on my Mercedes. I cut it out and used a type of Rubber Cement to glue it together and String to knot off the End as shown in the pic. You will be amazed at how much dirt the Pre-filter keeps out of the Air Filter Element.
