Is there a way to attach an OE fan to an electric motor? Thinking specifically of a 603, ~80% of the fan is offset from the radiator and ~80% of the radiator isn't ducted to the fan by the shroud. Centering the fan and shroud over the radiator with an M103 shroud should improve low speed cooling and AC performance.

Forget about an electric fan on a 603. There's only 3 inches of clearance and most good electric fans are 3.7 to 4" thick. If you find a fan that fits it won't pull as much air as the old one.

That's kinda my point. The water pump pulley flange is close to the radiator. There's more room at the center of the radiator core.

That's similar to what this guy did:

I was thinking about this today and managed to track down a site I'd read forever ago that described a similar idea in a z28. Use that volvo fan from the previous post, or the similar Ford Taurus fan. I don't think its big brother the Lincoln Mark VIII fan will fit depth wise, but if it would, the fan shroud would be almost perfect for the radiator. Use the Volvo controller mentioned in this link, and one of the Mercedes 3 pin fan fan switches that I'll bet will thread right in where most of us have a useless vacuum switch from the EGR system.

Not sure if this is the fan switch you would want, I know they come in different temp specs and the BMW ones mentioned in the link look like they thread in the same, just use different connectors. It'd be nice to make it look stock...

Just picked up a Volvo fan and controller relay, and it doesn't look like there's any way to fit it into my E300D. Mercedes' love of efficient space usage has left almost no room between the rad and the serpentine belt and all its associated pulley-driven friends.
The guy on ecomodder must have had a 250D or something; the OM606 simply leaves NO room for an e-fan.

However, in the process I removed the shroud around the aux fans up front. There was almost a quart of dirt, leaves, and bug parts collected in the bottom between shroud and radiator. The fans themselves are mounted to a rear frame with integral ducts for the fans, so no mechanical problems or lost performance there. I don't know why the front shroud is there in the first place, it just blocks airflow. Ilse seems to run about 3-5 °C cooler without the front shroud, and AC at idle is a little better as well.

I think I'm going to run the aux fans full-time until I get the fan clutch fixed.

Huh, here I thought the front shroud was a good thing. Maybe it was just the dirt removal? I'd say that dirt blocks 20% of the shrouded area.

FYI There is a seller on ebay selling fan clutches for the 617 new for $70 bucks.
At that price I had to try it. It has the exact same casting marks as the BEHR that I took off, it is just missing the tag with part number. It has been on now for two days but the weather has been cool. It is forcast near 100 later this week so I will let folks know how it works.

I have been running the $70 new ebay fan clutch for a while now and it seems to work fine. It has all the casting marks of the original Behr and I wonder if maybe it is a behr without the label.
