1983 300D Turbo Diesel Speedometer cable, help me peez?
When I bought the car, the speedometer and odometer were not working. The guy who I bought it from game me a replacement cable. I got the old one out, It was kinked and had broken inside. The one he gave me does not match the one I took out. The cable I need has square shafts on both ends, the one I have has a square shaft on the cluster end and a flat piece on the transmission end (Looks like a flat head screwdriver tip).
I just want to make sure I am get the correct part, as I've looked around the site and seen many people talking about gear ratios and putting the wrong parts in their cars that makes the speedo faster than it should be. So the cable I need has square tips/shafts on both ends. I could not find the part in the EPC. VIN # is WDB123133120160## Engine is 617 I believe Also, I don't need the cable that I have now. (Pictured below) Any idea what model/years it fits? I'd like to get it to someone who can use it. It works. Thank you, Stephen ![]()

Well, if it matches your make and model it probably is. Your picture does show the whole cable assembly. Usually that inner cable (the coiled steel part) will pull out and you can just replace that. If you are satisfied that the ends mount correctly to your speedometer and transmission, you might just pull that inner cable and go to NAPA and get a universal cable which (you use to be able to) cut to length and install whatever ends you wanted on it. Whether that would work for your cable or not I don't know, but it might. If you really want to be sure about the part you could call the people at "Fastlane" where you can buy Mercedes at the top of this page. They don't list the part on their short menu, at least I couldn't find it. But you can give them a call and they will get you the correct part, or at least very good information.

The part I got from pelican parts was perfect for my model. It fixed the speedo but not the odometer. And any time you have the speedometer cable out (new or used) make sure to lube up the insides with white lithium grease, It will help to prevent the jumpy reading on the needle and decrease noise.
Use this DIY to fix odometer. www.dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm Last edited by Lawngnome909; 07-22-2011 at 07:02 AM. Reason: I am Polish |

Here are a few spedo links that will help you.
Instrument cluster, Odometer, Speedometer, Tachometer links the Diesel Giant site is good. He shows using a screwdriver to mark up the shaft. that shaft is some hard metal. I used a set of 6 inch Vice Grips with a narrow nose to put some gouges in the shaft so the potmetal gear has something good to bite into. Charlie
