Number of links in a 190D VS 220D Timing Chain?
I was wondering if someone can tell me the number of links in a 220D versus a 190D timing chain?
I’m working on a 1965 190Dc with a 220D motor in it. When I ordered the timing chain I thought it was a 190 motor, I believe the chain I have now is too long for the 220D. I count 69 double links or 138 individual links on the new (190) chain and unfortunately I can’t locate the broken chain I removed from the motor to compare it to. The 220D chains I’ve found online all say they are 136 links. If the chain I have is just 2 links too long do any of you see a problem with just removing the extra links by grinding off the end of one of the pins and taking them off? The new chain I have is an Iwis and has the following numbers on the box: D67HP-7 138-VGLD/SS (1 ST) 50031570 KFZ 081 33013 301 001 997 31 94 Thank you for any and all help. Sven |

I actually have both a 190Db and a 220D/8, however neither one is close by or opened up. One thing I would verify before cutting any links is the fit of the new chain's links with the sprocket on the engine. If that is ok over several teeth all at one time, then you might try to fit the new chain to the engine and verify if the length works out. Only then would it be wise to be cutting off links.

Why not first check by part numbers? I suspect a possible difference between old gasser 220 and newer 190Dc. The 220 engine was first made about 52-53. Those inline six gassers stayed around for a long time, if you include the Unimogs... Good luck

I should have mentioned that I already have the chain installed and even with the tensioner all the way out there is still a half inch (or so) gap between the tensioner rod and the tensioner guide when I push the guide and chain all the way tight.
Yesterday I was only able to find a chain for the 220d online which is why I listed the part number for the chain I have since I can't find any specs on it. It just scares me a little to cut the links off the chain unless I am sure what size it is supposed to be. I will look some more for the broken chain today as that will tell me for sure how long the chain should be. The new chain and sprockets (190d stuff) are identicle to the 220d parts in the motor, so it just seams to be the length that is an issue. Thanks. |

I ended up cutting two links off the 190 chain I had ordered and everything lined up much better. Thanks for all the help.
