The more I "fix", the more it smokes.
Just finished the IP timing and took it out for an Italian tune up.
The first thing I noticed when it fired off was that the idling was much smoother than before and the cold engine shaking wasn't as bad. The engine is more quiet and the nailing that I'd previously posted about was gone. This gives me confidence that I didn't botch the IP adjustment. Power is about the same as before. However, it does seem to want to crank longer at start up. But once it does it lights off without any stumbling, unlike before. That being said, there was more greyish/white smoke than before. Previous, it would blow some white smoke at cold idle and disappear when it was warm. Now, there's still the smoke at cold idle but it now smokes at idle in Drive after it's warm. Curiously, after it's hot there's not so much smoke in Park. The black, sooty smoke while flooring it is still there. After a valve adjustment, fresh filters, fuel tank drain, diesel purge, and now an IP adjustment one would hope that the level of smoking would improve, not get worse. The PO replaced the injectors with Bosch remaned just over a year ago. Uncertain of mileage, but probably few as he stored the car during the winter. Should I take a look at those injectors? Prechambers? My line of thinking is that the root problem is the injectors. By making adjustments to bring the rest of the engine back into spec I'm exacerbating the real issue. What else should I consider? Edit: One final thought. I disconnected the vacuum line running to the rear of the IP (governor)? Would that be a possible cause if I buggered that?
