Engine shock question

The engine shock mount on my left motor mount is shot. I'm guessing the shock is probably bad, too. The engine mounts themselves were redone a few years ago and still look fine. If I remove the shock mount and the bottom shock nut, can I pull the shock up through the hole in the motor mount to replace it? Or will I have to undo the mounts and jack up the engine?

$120 per shock isnt really worth it IMO.

I've had an '81 300TD and an '83 300D Turbo -- both had shocks.
