Squealing belt, angled tensioner
My belt has been squealing as if loose for a few days and I just had a chance to inspect it. The spring and shock on the tensioner seem fine but the tensioner itself seems to be sitting out of plane with the other pulleys. It looks as if the tensioner is sitting crooked on it's pivot point. I recall reading a post on this a year or so ago but cannot seem to find it again. Anyone know what part it is I need to replace and is further damage to the tensioner possible if I drive or will it just keep squealing?
I've attached an image of the blowup for the tensioner

I am guessing that when you remove all of that stuff in the pic and inspect it you are going to find out what is worn out.
What is worn on yours may or may not be the same as what was worn in the other Thread. I put off fixing a belt tensioner once and it chewed up a new $50 belt; that resulted in the overheating of my Van. I was lucky the incident did no apparent damage to my Engine. Also the combined cost of the Belt Tensioner and another new Belt cost more than the Belt Tensioner by it self.

OOF. Check the timing chain cover for cracks. They are known to do that.

Two things can go out of alignment - the tensioner lever and the tensioner lever idler. Remove the belt and check both. Check the tensioner lever for smooth (no clicks) pivoting and check the pulley for smooth and quiet spinning. Check that both don't wobble about the crankshaft axis. The tensioner lever bolt can come loose so check that it's tightened to spec (70Nm?). IIRC it takes a 12mm hex bit. There are plastic caps over the tensioner lever bolt and idler bolt.
I wouldn't drive a car with an iffy belt tensioner. Too much at stake. Sixto 87 300D |

I just did my belt last week.
In my case I had to replace the belt, pulley#53,because the protective dust ring at the back of the pulley was completely worn out. Also have a GOOD look at stud # 17.mine was loose by maybe a quarter of a turn. Cheers

After seeing the diagram I'm curious whether it is part #23. Anyone know what that is? Bushing? Bearing?

Well then I guess that's not the smoking gun now is it. I'll have to get my hands on a 12mm allen and go hunting for broken parts!
