This should be a link to Diesel Giant Mercedes Vacuum Troubleshooting Basics. Although I believe it is aimed at the W123 series (climate control, etc. which the W115 does not have) I think it is worth checking out.

Thanks for the link, Tom. Too bad it wasn't for my car.

BTW, what does a dashpot do? I broke one, do I need to replace it? And how specific are they to a model and manufacturer?

A lot of it IS relevant to your car!

Mercedes did NOT reinvent the wheel when they went to the W123.... they used the same system that they had previously used in the W115, but just built it up more. Don't dismiss it as irrelevant.

I'm guessing Vacuum Control Valve (vcv). Very important. Not available anymore. You'll have to get one from a junkyard.

Kerry,
Are you referring to the white unit in the J line?

My car doesnt even have one. Same year, same model.

On top at the back of the IP. It controls vacuum to the transmission. Maybe there isn't one on a 115?

Tom, I looked at the link, but most of the components i saw are not on my car and since I need to follow the trail from component to component, I wouldn't know what to do.

A dashpot is what it is called. I don't know of any other name for it.

Not sure what you refer to. Is there a pic somewhere? The W123 has lots of things that the W115 doesn't have.

Dashpot. Sounds like an British/English term.

"Britain and the US. Two countries separated by a common language. " G.B.Shaw.

Well, I cant help you there then, since I have no idea what you are referring to. Got a picture of it?

No, sorry, I haven't bought one yet. I'd have to order it online. I can buy a similar device from a local place but it is about $90. Or I can buy just a gauge and that is about $15.

Tom, click on the link I provided for pictures.

It's a white plastic device that gets vacuum in one side, sends vacuum to the transmission out the other side and vents out another line.

Don't bother with the gauge, you can't do enough with it to properly diagnose the system. Order one from Harbor Freight or JC Whitney or something like that. Does Canadian Tire carry a cheap one?

This is the one I use:

You can't own an old Benz without one of these.
