123 alternator troubles

About 1 year ago I replaced the alternator on my 79 300td. I put in a 70amp bosch reman. I did not realize there was an internal regulator and simply put this new alternator in and drove. Over the last few weeks I have had what sounds to be a clicking noise near the alternator after the car is shut down. Also at the same time I noticed a clanking noise in this area, possibly the pulley on the alternator. Also there was an intermittent squeal from the alternator area (possibly the belt). Yesterday the belt on the alternator broke. I am not sure where to start. Am I right to believe I should have changed some wiring when putting in this type of alternator with an internal regulator? Any help on the matter would be appreciated. As a side note, with the belt now off, the alternator spins freely by hand without any noise. I would hate to put in a new belt only to find there are more things I should have done before putting it back together. Any help would be appreciated.
