W124 Vent Squeaking

Over the past couple months I've gotten an occasional squeal out of the passenger side vent on my 87 300D. But it usually would go away. However I got in it today and it did it for about 6 minutes non-stop. I shut the car off, and when I keyed it back on it came back and stayed on until I turned the car off again when I got home.

It sounds like its coming from just under the vent inside the dash.

Its not an animal, its been going on for months and whatever is in there would have died.

However it isn't stopping this time, and is absolutely infuriating to listen to.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Maybe it's the little air sampler motor/fan (the one draws air through a pipe leading up the A-pillar to the duct on the ceiling lamp console). You'll find this motor behind the glove box. Dry bearings.

This happened to me sporadically this winter. Sounded like it was coming from the center vent in mine, but the inside of the "glovebox" (mine has an airbag there instead, grumble grumble) is that direction too. Mine wasn't a continuous squeal, but an intermittent chirp, like the sound plastic fittings make when they're loose.

I fixed it by cursing and banging my fist on the dashboard until it stopped. Seems to have done the trick.

Definitely sounds like the sampler blower motor. Just remove glove box and replace it. Cheap, easy fix. My 91 300D had this problem when I acquired it.

Dealer item or should I buy online?

I have to head to the main dealer today to pick up my trunk stops.

Dealer retail is $60.00.
