Lost a Darn Banjo Bolt!!! Help! Please!

OK...Here's the story: Decided to clean out banjo bolts this morning on my 1985 300SD as we finally had a cool one in South Texas...kind of cool anyway. After cleaning the bolt behind the intake, went to the one on the ALDA. My cell phone, which was on my toolbox rang. Engaged in a couple of minutes of needless conversation, went back to my work and my hand knocked the banjo bolt off its perch on the area just above driver side head lamp. It fell...I heard it fall but after two hours of intense search...I CAN NOT FIND IT! Where the heck can it be? This is the banjo bolt with the little fitting on the top for a small vacuum hose to fit onto. Where can I find one...new or used. Oh...I also had both little washers on the bolt too. What an idiot I am. Thanks for any help. Bolt looks just like attached pic

Behind the IP is a "trap" for fallen screws and bolts. (between the IP and the block) Use a small telescope magnet or a mirror + flashlight and check there. If you cannot find it there then also check on top of the oil pan- it flares out and things can and do fall on it without making it to the ground. I hope you find it! If not I'm sure some forum member will be able to send you one asap. If you do not find it by tomorrow I'll get one at the yards here and send you it.

Welcome to the fraternity! BTDT. What you have discovered, among other things, is that this 'banjo' bolt is really misnamed: it is actually related to its cousin, the 'Jesus' clip, apparently. As in, 'oh Jesus, where the heck did THAT go?"

Car parts are thusly named because they have an innate gift for seeking out the deepest, darkest, most inaccessible nooks and crannies in the engine compartment whenever they are allowed to roam free. I strongly recommend buying one of those little magnetic parts dishes to place them in next time. But that is 20/20 hindsight, and does not help you now.

The solution to your dilemma is actually surprisingly simple: have you noticed how the lost part always turns up in the last place you look? The obvious solution, therefore, is to reverse the order of your search: look in the last place FIRST. Piece of cake, right?

If for some reason that suggestion doesn't work, don't be disheartened. I have another simple solution: slowly, meticulously simply disassemble the whole car, starting in the area where you last heard the bolt fall. It may take a year or two, but trust me: you will find your missing bolt, and all will be well again.

On the other hand, you could just cop out, concede defeat and accept the generous offers above from other forum members. The choice is yours. I know what I would do.

Wink wink nudge nudge.

Good luck and keep us posted!

It might be less work than taking the car apart to flip the car upside-down and give it a shake.

What a great bunch of guys!

It's a great feeling to know you guys are out there. Knowing that I'm not the only one who PREFERS driving a 30-year-old MB...a diesel at that...to just about ANY other car. And I want to thank all of you who have offered to help me with my screw up. I am posting a photo of my ALDA taken from one of my previous posts when it was not missing the banjo bolt in question. PLEASE note that this bolt has a fitting on the head for a little rubber hose. If someone's got one, please let me know. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS THE BANJO AT THE BACK OF THE INTAKE as it has the fitting on the top. The second photo is one I found using search. See the banjo with the fitting on the end. In that photo, no lines are attached. That's the banjo I need. Many thanks to all of you!

I have made my own banjo bolt in a similar situation a while back. Go to your friendly neighborhood hardware store and get a regular bolt of the right thread and length and carefully drill a small hole down the center, then enlarge the hole to the appropriate size. Then drill two or thee cross hole up near the head of the bolt and get some copper crush washers from the auto parts store. The kid at the counter of the McParts store will not be able to help you but they usually have some copper washers for brake fittings and/or oil pan draing plugs in the Help section. If you have a NAPA nearby you stand a better chance.

Don't worry about it now. I sent Reg the correct bolt and washers this AM.
