NED 2683,
I would suggest that you do NOT connect the tank type heater to the radiator drain. All the instructions say that the inlet to the heater is to come from the block drain. Just put a threaded fitting in where the block drain plug was and attach a hose to it with a hose clamp. If you have a heater with out an internal pump, the heater must be mounted low to cause gravity to flow the hot coolant from the heater thru the engine. These heaters work fast because of the high power (wattage). You wouldn't want to leave them on indefinitely so a to not to increase you electric bill substantially. Some, maybe all, have an internal thermostat so they won't overheat or boil over. I would make sure to buy one with a thermostat P E H |

Mccan,
The tank type engine heaters cost some where in the neighbor hood of $35. They are well worth it if you have trouble starting your enging when it is cold. P E H |

I installed an oil pan heater this year. Installation was very simple. Since it has not been super cold here this year I have only used it a few times- but it worked just fine. No financial interests etc.

The tank type heaters are far superior to oil pan heaters because they get the heat to where you need it: inside the cylinder head and around the cylinders in the block. Warm oil in the pan does not help starting that much because it doesn't get into the engine until after the engine is running and pumping oil. Some heatwill rise from the warm oil pan, but this takes a long time and much heat is wasted into the air.

12 volt tank heaters
The friend of mine from whose estate I purchased my "new" 300TD used to have a '79 300D which had two full size Diesel batteries under the hood, one on each side of the firewall, and they were wired with one of those electronic selective recharging systems such as are used for motor homes, etc. The second battery's sole purpose was to power a 12 volt block heater system which included a time clock on the dash so that it could be set to kick in during the wee hours of the morning or towards the end of the workday. Was this a regular Mercedes option, or an aftermarket device, and are they common in Canada or Scandinavia??

Engine heater $10-20!!!
I noticed one of theses the other day. It is tankless but may work if the flow of coolant is out through the lower radiator hose into the block. Convection would create circulation. These type used to be called Tractor Heaters. Just another thought.Good luck.
