It may very well be a broken pressure plate finger floating around and jamming the works.

Thanks for the responses... one other thing I should have mentioned. The problem with the pedal being "soft" for the first 1/2 way got worse over time. Like at first it was only maybe 1/4 of the travel, but now it has gotten to be 1/2.
That's one thing that made me think it might be hydraulic related.

Okay, THAT sounds like a hydraulic issue. Ensure that the m/c reservoir is full and bleed the clutch. The stepping on a rock part is almost certainly mechanical, however.
