Grommet from Turbo drain to pan

Can the grommet from the turbo drain to the pan be changed without removing the lower portion of the pan, or changing the oil?
I have a good oil leak when going up steep hills, and this area is always wet, and clean. So I wanted to change the grommet and the o-ring where the two pieces of the drain meet.
Thanks
Doug

Assuming you have an OM617 engine, yes, the grommet can be changed with oil in the pan and without removing anything. Be careful not to drop pieces of the old grommet into the pan; the old grommet will probably be hardened into plastic by age and heat.

I did that job on my '85 300D-T (W123, OM617). It wasn't easy and I don't remember which home-made pusher tool did the job. As I recall, I couldn't decide whether to install the grommet and then the tube (that tended to push the new grommet into the pan) or put the grommet on the drain pipe and then push the whole thing into the pan.

My picture collection shows the drain pipe with an o-ring at each end and the grommet at the lower end; a piece of schedule 40 PVC (white) pipe was used as the pusher. It fits over the drain pipe and pushes on the grommet. You can tap on it from above with a soft mallet. Seems to me it didn't work very well but I kept at it and eventually the grommet popped in. Access isn't the greatest and I did the job while installing a trap-cat bypass pipe so I had the turbo and everything else out of the car. I'm sure someone else with multiple experiences has a better method.

The two pieces of the drain pipe are sealed to each other by o-rings; they simply slide together. replace the o-rings and use a little oil so the pipes will slide together easily. IIRC, there's also a paper gasket at the top end (underside of turbo).

The same job on the OM603 engine is a lot easier (but that doesn't help you, does it?).

You may have better luck than me but I found I could not pull out the Turbo Drain in the manner I copied from one of the threads; that is putting a Hose Clamp around the Turbo Drain and prying it up and out.
I started to dent the Drain tubing more than I wanted to and ended up removing the Pan and knocking it up and out.
(You will need the Grommet, 2 O-rings and a new Gasket for the bottom of the Turbo.)

Below is what I did.

Same here, that darn tube is very difficult to pull out. So I waited to the next oil change and dropped the pan.

I just did this service earlier this year and agree with above. I opted to pull the pan, change the oil, clean things in general.

It was easiest to push the grommet from under with pan off. It was hard as a rock and just broke apart into pieces. I could not get it back together with out removing the upper part of the tube from the base of the turbo. It is really hard to get the upper part of the tube out and back in, but if you get it up into a pocket just right, it clears the lower tube enough for reassembly. I fought and fought with this but found that there is just one position for the upper tube off to the side of where it bolts in that allows the bottom to come up enough to clear the top of the lower tube. Just barely clears and easily slips together. No leaks. Very happy.

For the future, I wont ever remove the pan from an OM617 without planning to replace that stupid grommet as well. I also had a terrible leak. Valdez style leak.

Best of luck.

I posted pics somewhere - used 2 long 3.8 extensions to & tapped the grommet in.

Easier to pull the pan. There is a gasket set ~ $60 (Elring brand??) that has turbo gaskets etc. down to the intake. The price was all over the place when I bought the gasket set but the local NAPA price matched gladly. (I just responded "how much will you make if I buy it from the other guy?" to the counterman's statement that he wasn't "making enough" at my price. I'm sure Phil has what you need at probably the best prices around - They win all ties but it never helps to shop.

I didn't pull the intake to renew the gasket but should have since I was there. The job would have been quicker if I hadn't screwed around trying to do it without taking things apart. It isn't a bad job once you decide to get into it enough to fix it. Playing around the perimeter doesn't get it.

I do have the 617, and was hoping that I could get this done quickly. Sounds like I have to pull the pan etc.
Thanks

I JUST did this job myself and ended up having to pull the pan and use a JACK to push the drain tube out. I didn't bother taking the tube off the bottom of the turbo though? that wasn't leaking or anything, just pulled the turbo up and off just fine. I was messing with a bunch of other stuff at the same time as well, so I had the turbo off anyway.

Oil pan comes off real easy, don't over torque the bolts when you put it back together or you'll crack the gasket (don't ask me how I know that).

oil leak

It's the tube thats leaking , pobably not the grommet, It's an ugly project ,you need a lift. Drop the pan a must. If you can't get your turbo un bolted, it's not easy.

I forgot to mention that on my the Blow By Draing Tune is right next to the Turbo Draing Tube. There is a O-ring on a Nipple coming off of the top of the Pan that needs to be changed so the Blow By Drain Tube seals.

Is there any difference in the Tube or Grommet changing procedure when it comes to Garrette or KKK Turbocharger or between Federal and California Cars?

I did it the easy way. Washed and degreased the area then gooped it with RTV Silicone. Been dry ever since.
