Steering Damper Replacement Basics

Thought I might replace my steering damper....have read some threads, was hoping you guys with more experience could confirm/comment.

Is this what I do?

1. Car up on ramps.
2. Remove encapsulation panel.
3. Remove two damper bolts/nuts (17mm).
4. Replace damper.
5. Tighten bolts.

Can I use old nuts and bolts, or should they be replaced?

I don't have a torque wrench? Is good-n-tight good enough?

Thanks.

It sounds like you have a good plan. Paramount is having the car safely supported and the parking brake set and rear wheels chocked(sic).

I think you could reuse the hardware, but I would use some blue Locktite(r) and snug it up somewhat tight. Use brakekleen to clean up the bolts and nut Before applying the threadlocker.

Good luck.

It doesn't hurt to insert steps 2.a. and 3.a. - take digital photo before disassembling anything.

That way if there's a question or problem the photo is already there.

Autozone and others have loaner torque wrenches. Pay your deposit, get it all back upon return.

probably the easiest steering/suspension job ever. Have done this on all my cars as it's cheap and offers a worthwhile improvement. You'll spend the majority of your time getting the car up and removing the bottom panel, then putting the panel back on again. 2 bolts for the damper, slide the old one out and the new one in, noting which way 'round the old one came out. Fine to re-use the old bolts, good-n-tight is ok and away you go. Check your engine (motor) mounts while you're under there.
