Glow plugs: 606 vs 617

I removed the glow plugs from my 95 e300d on Thanksgiving and it took me 7 hours. I removed the glow plugs from my 85 300td today and it took me 40 minutes. I really like the steel head. I just had to crack the plugs on the 85 and then I could turn them out by hand. 3 of 5 were bad. Replacements already ordered from Phil.

Couple of questions. What is the torque value for the glow plugs on the 617 when I put the new ones in?

Also, what wrench/socket setup is best? I used wobbles, uni-joints, extensions and open end wrenches and it was still tight. Actually, my crow-foot flare nut wrench worked pretty good. Any tips will be used and appreciated.

Dang, I just loved how they just came out. Like magic. Removing the plugs from the 95 was like voodoo or some sort of satanic hex.

It's not the aluminum head, the 602/603 glowplugs come out easily, it's an issue only on the 606.

I'm gonna go out on a limb . Recently I was told a "different" way to change glow plugs on the 606.
First clean engine. Remove intake. Start car and when it gets to operating temp. shut motor down. Replace 1 glow plug. Then repeat the same for each additional glow plug.
The gentlman who told me this said since he started doing it this way he never has had to pull a head. Although it takes a lot longer. But not as long as pulling the head for a broken one.
I am debating on doing it his way.

Along with the length of the 606 Glow Plugs Carbon conspires to trap the tips and the Aluminum to Steel inteface can corrode.

Beru sells some special Glow Plug Grease to help kee them from getting stuck in the Aluminum Heads.

But, Never seeze type compounds also work.

The pic below shows the 617 pencile type Glow Plug Reamer compared to the 606 Glow Plug Reamer that might help with the Carbon build up issue.

The use of some type of Antiseize compound and the Glow Plug Reamer give you a better chance of the Glow Plugs coming out easier the next time.

Have removed my glow plugs three times on my 606 engine. On a cold engine the first time I broke off a glow plug and had to drill it out. The last two times I did it on a hot engine and they almost unscrewed themselves. I think doing it hot is the key. You don't need to do one plug at a time and warm the engine again. Just get it good and hot and it will stay hot enough to remove the manifold and break all six of the plugs loose.

Certainly removing the GPs when the Engine is hot is one of the things that helps put the odds in your favor of getting the GPs out with no problems.
However, anyone doing the job for the first time ought to read up on the job and plan for a ride to work incase one of the GPs does break.

If the above seems pessimistic it took me about 8 hours over the course of 3 days to beat out a Stuck LCA Bolt due to it being corroded to the
Aluminum tube.
Those threads where people did the job with no problems did not help much.

Sokoloff, your glow plug issue was a Diesel Forum classic. I read it many times.
