I recently bought a 1995 E 300 Diesel Special Edition (245,000 miles). I'm trying to sort out his problems as they surface.

1. Every morning after preglow the engine starts easily but puts out clouds of bluish, grayish white smoke! It doesnt smell like coolant. In addition the engine bangs and shakes. When warmed up the smoke stops completely and the engine calms down and is very smooth! Doesn't do it again the rest of the day even after sitting 12 hours.

2. The transmission shifts very smoothly, too smoothly in fact. I thought it was slipping but a friend drove it and said it just shifts too soft.

3. The front end parts are okay but the steering is loose. Is the steering box adjustable like the box on my 1984 300D was?

3. yes, but adjusting the steering box is the last thing you try after fixing all other sloppy steering components first
