124 Rear wheel carrier questions

93, 300D, 2.5T, W124 car.
  • Can the rear wheel carrier be fully removed from the car without any damage to the rear wheel bearing? I find bits and pieces about this on the forum but can't find exactly what I am looking for. I am just wanting to pull off the carrier (hub intact presumably removed from 5-link suspension and axle so I can put it up on my press to do the LCA bushing. I assume there must be a spline in the hub and that the axle will just pull out and be able to be re-inserted without issue but that isn't clear to me from my reading on here.
  • Anyone got any pics of the 124 rear wheel carrier removed? In particular the backside or inside?
  • Does anyone have a write-up with pics of the rear wheel bearing R&R since I am talking about the rear carrier. There is a wiki DIY but it's not the most informative of the real juicy part of the process. It is light on pics and basically removes the carrier and then kind of does a shazam, takes it to a shop for bearing replacement. That's great, but I am interested in the details on the black box part of the procedure on what the innards look like and how they assemble/disassemble.

PICS ARE GREAT - GREAT FORUM BUT NEVER ENOUGH PICS ON HERE!!!!

The rear wheel carrier can be removed ,in total, without damage.

BUT,unless you're gonna replace all the Links ,you're "Treating Yourself"
to an awful lot of extra work, just to R+R the bushing. This would save you
all that:

pfft... I just swapped in a good entire subframe... I found it easier than dealing with the bearing... and I got good ball joints and links all for the trouble of 4 large bolts...

I just did my carrier bushings. Getting the link off was straighforward once I bent the brake shield out of the way.
