Smile hazard flasher relay fix...

My flasher in my 81 300d started to flake out... what to do? i heard these were unavailable or some outeageous price so i decided to see what was inside...
Popped it apart with a jewelers screwdriver watch for the 2 big coilsprings!
once apart you can see the bulb and the cover for the bottom of the circuit board. You have to desolder 2 places to get the board out. I use rat shack desolder braid. it works ok... These spots are pretty easy to spot. they are connected to flat pieces of tinned strap. once disconnected you can pull the board out. I cleaned up the relay contacts with some thin cardboard and deoxit spray. found that the board had an electrolytic capacitor on board. Bad news!
These things go bad after many years of service. Replacement was easy as i had one in the junkbox. i used a 1uf 50volt. it was the same size as the original 1uf 6.3volt. voltage doesnt matter as long as its over the original voltage but the capacity does matter it has to do with the timing circuit.
make sure you put the neg side to the board neg groundplane Electrolytic caps are polarized and will only work in one way. Change that sucker!
Reassembly can be a challenge but i know that most of you can handle it!
Just take your time. Mine worked straight away. Enjoy your Blinkies!
