722.303 trans leak

The trans in my 617.951 powered 53 F100 has sprung a significant leak. On the RH side, toward the rear, there is a small cover held in by a snap ring. What seals this cover? And if there is a spring, how strong is it?
Any help appreciated, tired of buying fluid
