How To Repair Exterior Temperature Gauge Connection?

92 300D. Exterior temperature gauge is intermittent. Will be on or off for random amounts of time without my doing anything. However, if it's off and I want it to come on, all I have to do is smack the dash area beneath the instrument cluster and it will come back on. So it seems pretty clear there's a loose or dirty connection.

How do I access it and troubleshoot?

Thanks.

Sounds like a bad ground to me. After you pull the cluster make sure the bundle of ground wires behind the cluster are contacting well and the connection is tight.
