617 turbo into 240d tach question

I am getting ready to move the engine from my 82 300CD into pancakes the 82 240d. I am going to swap the radiator, rear end and insturment cluster as well. I am wondering about getting the tach to work.

Is there a wire that will need to be run from the sensor to the cluster?

The 1982 300CD engine should have a pickup on the crankshaft and there should be a diagnosis plug plus amplifyer on the car itself. Transfer the plug plus amplifyer and associated wiring and the tach itself and you are done.

Yes, if you can source the harness from a junked car.

In a nutshell, take the diagnostic connector from the crank, using your "new" mount, attach that into bottom. Also source an amp, plug that in the top of the mount too. This makes the connection to the tach, one with two prongs on the back. The harness from the mount to the tach and a different wire from the crank top the mount is what you'll need.

You'll have to figure out the placement of the three wires from the larger side of the amp mount. Brown is ground, there's a power lead and not sure what else, or which two go to the tach.

The 240d has a tach pickup going to the egr computer. You can then do funola's 240d tach trick.

The diagnosis plug is the thing with the largish screw off cap on the lf inner fender? Then I just take the wiring that goes from the back of it to the dash and ferret out them from the whatever harness they get tied to and surgically remove them? ( actually I suspected that was what to do.)

I see, the engine you're going to swap in has everything you need, all hooked up, except for the wiring harness to the tach. That can be sourced from the CD as well.

Good luck and keep us posted.
