Stuck gearbox, stuck key, tis the season for WTF?!?!?
So this morning when I went to start the car to let it warm up, glow plug light went off, must not have turned the key all the way, clicked it back one position, then went through the process again, no go. Remove the key, go through proess again, starts right up, leave to warm up. Return in a few minutes, go to put in Drive with MEGA resistance.... Hmmm.... Put in Park and went to start the restart the car, now the key won't come out.... Steering wheel is not locked and the car will not roll in Neutral or really "seat" into any positions. I've read multiple threads about the ignition switch, however none of them have mentioned the gearbox issues I am experiencing or the fact that the car will start just fine. The wife had to drive me to work today and I am not looking forward to troubleshooting when I get home. Any suggestions on where to begin? The vehicle is a 1996 E300D automatic.
Thank you guys, I don't know where I'd be with the website formerly known as Mercedes Shop!!

New enough to have the fixed interlock between park position and ignition key? If so the linkage in that system is bent up seized or whatever. If the car was left unlocked the previous evening I wonder if someone might have damaged something trying to steal the car.

Car was locked overnight with no signs of tampering. My driveway has a VERY slight slope and I always back the car in. It seems like this has more to do with the gearbox than the ignition switch, however the key will not come out. Thank you for the reply. Should be a fun project for the evening /sarcasm

**UPDATE**
I have removed the lower dash to take a look at the linkage as I am fairly certain the solution has something to do with getting the cable to "release".
The car will start and shut off fine. The key can not be removed from the ignition. The gear selector is very difficult to move and does not "seat" in any of the positions. Is there a way to get the vehicle in Neutral and "reset" the locking cable? Does anyone have a diagram of the system? I will continue to search for possible solutions so that my wife doesn't have to give me a ride to work in the morning.... any advice is more than appreciated. Thanks all.

Confusion
So after various attempts to get the car in gear/get key out I have come to a state of total confusion....
Jacked rear of vehicle up, both wheels spin freely as if in Neutral.... then set the vehicle back down and tried to move it, the vehicle behaved as though it was in gear (kinda rocked back and forth). Regardless of where the gear selector is located the car will start, does this mean that it is bypassing the gear position sensor or that the sensor "sees" that it is in Park? I was able to get the anti-theft system to honk the horn and flash the lights, then turning the spare key in the door was able to disable it. As soon as you enter the vehicle the dash says to take the key (no crap Mercedes THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO!!!) I have placed chocks under the wheels in case of Divine intervention. So what should my next step be? I am going to find instructions for removing the center console to access the other end of the cable coming out of the ignition / from the brake pedal. If that fails to resolve the problem I will attempt to safely raise the vehicle to adjust the linkage from underneath. This one really has me stumped....

I do love one thing about living in the information age and that is access to information!
MB 210 center console - YouTube What would we do without instant access to nearly any information our hearts desire?

So I have removed the center console exposing the two cables, is there a way to release the tension? It would be great to get this solved and not force my wife to have to drive me to work in the morning

Disconnect the battery and reset everything, just a guess but worth a shot.
