Coolant leak.

Hello guys. I have a question on a coolant leak on my 1982 300td. I bought this car that was sitting for a great deal of time. I got it running and found it to have a coolant leak that looks like on the front of the engine around the water pump. I purchased a water pump and havent been able to change it yet. The weep hole is on the top and it looks wet inside. The leak looks like it is under the water pump and flows out pretty good. Is there anything else that has coolant running at the front of the block below the pump? Could it be the pump or gasket leaking also? Im new and trying to learn what i can. I also have a parasitic draw on my new battery i have to trace down too. Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

There is a gasket between the water pump and water pump housing, and also a gasket between the water pump housing and the block. Mine was actually leaking between the water pump housing and block. I would clean it up as best you can and try to observe whether the coolant is coming from the weep hole (isn't there one on the bottom too or is that my imagination?), the pump-housing gasket or the housing-block gasket. There is also a small metal tube above the water pump that can leak, though you would probably see evidence of it on top or side of the pump too.

I havent pulled it apart yet. I was planning on it this weekend. I have not looked to see if the pump has 2 weep holes. It just might and i have not noticed. I can see that it is leaking in the area of the water pump and below. I cant see exactly where it is i guess when i tear it down i will get a better look. I just wondered if there was a certain spot they leak at. Thanks for the help

Yeah it's a tough one to see what's going on there, I can relate to that. Once you get the fan and pulley off you should have a better view. I think it's less common to have it leak between the housing and block than it is to leak at the circular gasket right behind the pump itself or out of the pump itself, but I may be incorrect. I can post a couple pictures when I get home but I'm at work for a couple more hours ... also mine is a little different as it is a 240D but may give you a basic idea of what to expect. Unless someone can chime in with more specific and expert advice.
