1987 300d Lowering suspension.

I am thinking about replacing the springs on my 1987 300d with the sportline springs. It seems as though this is the cleanest and best option to lower a w124 about an inch. I have done a lot of reading on this topic on various forums but I have yet to see a list of the exact sportline springs that would be recommended for my car. does anyone have experience with this? I am in need of part numbers of springs and the spring spacers.

Springs & More Springs

I'm quite pleased with the H&Rs I installed on both my W124 and S124

How much did it lower the car? did you replace the struts too? how is the alignment/tire wear? Which H&R combo did you use?

The S124 has Bilstein Sports on the front and SLS struts on the back.
The W124 has older Bilstein HD at both ends. So far no odd wear, especially on the back, which can be prone to inner camber wear with some lowered setups. I just bought a generic box o' H&Rs off of ebay in both cases, so I don't know which versions I have. I'd have to measure, but I think the springs dropped them down about an inch or slightly more. If you're worried about it, just buy a couple different size spring pads and play with the heights from there. Do you have a KLANN or a clone-type spring compressor?

I work for Mercedes as a technician so have access to all the factory tools. I will check into the H&R a little more.

+1 for the H&R springs. be ready to replace your spring pads however.

My car (1987 300D) had the 2-tab pads front and rear. The rear ride height was fine, with H&R. . .but the front was WAY to low.

I ended up needing 4-tab spring pads up front.

I also put in Bilstein HD's at all 4 corners (the yellow ones) and 16" CLK wheels. very happy with the final outcome.

I'll post a pic when I get home

Brian

yes my mistake.

I did install Bilstein Sport shocks. in the 300D

I confused the Bilstein names. . in the VW world the black ones are TC's (a cheap option) and the yellow are HD's. . (heavy duty and vastly different from the TC's)

but this is a MB forum . . .oops
