5 way vacuum connector
87 300SDL
I replaced the 5-way rubber connector just above the vacuum pump (connects to 61b and 62 in the attached diagram). The part was from an MB dealer , so I didn't test it. As soon as I replaced it, the trans started shifting hard, wrong place, etc. I tested the vacuum at the pump (#67 in the attached diagram), and got a full 22+ reading. I eliminated the strainer (#62) & ran vacuum hose directly to the bottom of the 5-way, where the strainer (#62) had been connected. I got no vacuum from the 5-way port leading to the #61a connector, which seems to eventually get to the transmission. There was also no vacuum from one of the 5-way ports on the opposite side of the connector. This can't be right. Shouldn't the 5-way just pass the vacuum through to each output opening, making the vacuum at any of the openings the same 22+ I measured at the pump? thanks Bruce S |

Using a new five way connector was your mistake.
You need a three way "F" connector. The two lines that go to the right side of the vehicle need to be eliminated and all the devices on the right side can be eliminated. They control EGR and ARV functions only and are commonly the source of vacuum leaks that result in very hard shifts. Dave has a p/n for the "F" connector somewhere on here. I can find it when I'm thinking more clearly. |

1. Who knows What the 'Ell the replacement 5way is constructed like as far as
Q.C. ? 2. 'Could there be a "Fault" with the REplaced 5way that some Wrench has "Corrected" for in the Tranny Control Vacuum System? [The New 5Way puts the Vacuum control system out of "Specs" ?] Why Y'all replacing the 5 way ??? ALL those Electro/Vacuum actuators marked Y-31 are ALWAYS suspect for Problems. I'm ALWAYS a "Fan" of gsxr's Wastegate Swap: Wastegate actuator swap for OM602.962? OM:602,603 Etc.,Etc.

F connector
Thanks! Well, there's no vacuum going to the right two lines now, so it can't get any worse. (I've already disabled the vacuum line to the exhaust gas recirculation valve.)
I replaced the 5-way because the original one broke from age. I can see what one of the lines going to the right do, but the other goes to "c," which is just called "other ancillaries." Anyone know what those are? So, is my original supposition correct, that the 5-way shouldn't function as any kind of vacuum restriction? |

Wrong side?
After reading the Wastegate post, I think that I interpreted Brian's post backwards: that is, I should eliminate the vac lines going to the passenger side of the car (to the EGRV, & the Recirculating Air Valve) and use the F connector to run vacuum to the driver side (going to "c" and to the vacuum control unit.) I was taking "right" to be diagram right. Wrong, right?

Is either the hose or the 5-way collapsing under vacuum? Have you removed the 5-way and put air pressure through each hole to check for blockages?

5-WAY
Thanks everyone for putting up with this thread. I found a blockage in the vac hose near the 5-way that was causing the problem. I won't be more specific in order to avoid ridicule. Now I'll try those suggestions and move on to getting the vacuum to the tranny right.
