Exhaust leak cause idle issues?

I have a 1979 240d that i'm trying to work all the bugs out on. Just curious, could an audible exhaust leak at the manifold/flange cause a rough idle? I know it seems abstract, and I should fix these leaks anyway, but I'm not sure how sensitive diesels are to exhaust back pressure issues.. and I just want to know.
