"Cars of Particular Interest"--Other States Have This Nonsense?

The state of Rhode Island, in its infinite wisdom, designates certain cars "Cars of Particular Interest." What this means is that, regardless of what you actually pay for a car, if you buy from an individual you have to pay 7% of the NADA value. And, wouldn't you know it, ANY Mercedes is a car of particular interest. And I don't have to tell you guys the kind of discrepancy there is between market value and NADA. It's just ridiculous. Almost makes me wish I were back in Texas....

pretty weird. don't feel too singled out, since all the luxury brands are on there, but if anyone finds a "mayback", let me know.

I'd just like to know this history and the logic of it, the rationale behind it.

To pick your pocket!

CT just went to paying sales tax based on blue blook for everything, regardless of what you paid!

Well, I knew that. Just trying to figure out why the discriminatory approach. At least CT, to its credit, is consistent.

NADA just seems like a racket....but that's another post (that I've already done).

It's like class warfare. They probably figured it's an easier sell to target Benz, et al.

in theory it's to prevent people from saying they bought a perfectly fine 2002 MB for $500. i actually like the idea behind it, but using the blue book value is dumbbbbbbbb

Is this not a tax on non existent money and therefor illegal ? How can you tax something...money.... that never changed hands ?

Next they will charge sales tax on bartering.

NADA Book Value:

1980 Mercedes-Benz 300D 4 Door Sedan........

Pricing.................

Original Price= $24,536 Low = $4,925 Private Party Sale = $7,525 .

Retail = $9,950

So what amount are they going by to get their 7%?

They don't make it clear. Maybe their ambiguity is their loss!

They already do if the barterers follow the law and report the transactions. I'm dreading the day when our cash is taken away.

Changing the $100 bills made some of the drug dealer's stashes obsolete. Not only do they have to find a way to get the cash back into the system, they have to exchange it for a modern bill. Sorry state of affairs.

Well, Texas has it now on all private sales. Started two years ago. You pay tax on the NADA value or what you actually paid, whichever is HIGHER. They could are less what's on a Bill of Sale. Only way around it is from a dealer which is still based on actual sales price.
