You realize that this is a 500 SEC that has a 5 cyl. turbo diesel engine (617) transplant.
I highly doubt that it gets 38 mpg. That car weights more than the car the engine came out of and those got 25 to 27 mpg. I have a 380 SEC with a 6 cyl. turbo diesel (603, more powerful, more efficient than a 617) that can get about 30 mpg if that is what I really want to do. It is worth what someone will pay for it. There is no "market value" for a frank-in car. Look up the value of a 1989 500 SEC as a starting point. It could be your dream car, or a nightmare if the swap was a bungled mess. The drive train might be just fine, but the vacuum system and the electrical wiring could be a mess. I paid $1300 for mine with the engine swap done. The person unfortunately swapped in a bad motor, which I have replaced. It is my dd, but it will be awhile before I have the vacuum and electrical systems sorted out.

Of course as you are well aware our imperial gallons are larger even than texas gallons. The milage quoted is still a stretch in my opinion. Somewhere in the twilight zone as usual. Downhill with a sail attached maybe.

There is a member on the forum ICEFIRE I believe is his name, swapped in a OM617 in a SEC a few years ago.
Buying some elses engine swap could be a good or bad depending on the quality of the work and condition of the engine. you would have to really check every thing over good and do a compression check to see the health of the engine. it could be a money pit to get it right. 8k seems a bit high, but the guy is probably trying to recoupe his costs. I see these coupes more and more in the yards, and with the 560 engine, and the high fuel costs make it prohibitive to feed and care for. they are a beautiful design though. I like the 617 engine, and would do this swap for me, not to resell. the 300SD has this engine also and the weight difference between the 2 can`t all that much different. but 38mpg is streatching it a bit. maybe if it had a manual trans it will be better, but not 38. Look at it with your eyes wide open. Charlie
