Coolant Filter -Anyone using?
The thread about adding a trans cooler got me to thinking about coolant filtration. Anyone using one in particular that they would like to recommend? I have citric acid flushed all my cars successfully -just curious if I have additional debris in the system - curious about what I might collect after driving a week -

Making a Coolant Filter for 81 300sd Making a Coolant Filter for 81 300sd Some info in the above thread. Summery my comments: A bypass type one will not prevent your Radiator from being plugged and a Full Flow one will help keep the Radiator clean but can get plugged and cause over heating.

There are some contaminants in cooling systems that are soluble at high temps & insoluble at slightly lower temps aluminum hydroxide is one. It tends to precipitate in the radiator core as the coolant is cooled, hence radiator blockage.
Some large diesel motors have coolant filters. You may be better off cleaning out the crud that collects in the bottom of the cooling cavities of the block. I have seen old diesels with an inch or 2 deep crud in the bottom of the cavities in the block.

The idea situation is to have the Coolant Filter installed when the Engine was new. That way the bypass type Filters are useful.
The Filters often have replacement additives that help prevent cavitation; cavitation can be especially bad on Diesels that have Wet type Liners if not prevented. I know more than one person who has done an Engine Flush on gasoline engined Cars only to have the Radiator plug and overheat. From what I have read on this forum if you do a Citrus Flush you should plan for the worse and make sure you have another ride to work. The reason is the Citrus Flush often removes or loosens stuff that was keeping Core/Freeze Plugs from leaking or the Heater Core from leaking.
