bad milage on 300d. what to do?

i have an 81 300d merc with 180,000 miles on it. it seems to only be getting about 23 miles per gallon. what could be causing this and what can i do to fix it. it should be getting around 30 - 35 mpgs, right? any ideas would be helpful. thanks.

23 may be slightly low but sounds about right - especially if you do alot of around town driving with the a/c compressor running.
You need to get a manual tranny 240D to get to the 33 mpg range and a mid 60's W110 diesel with manual tranny to get better than that.

Thats about what I get but I alternate between stop and go city driving and 70-80 mph highway bursts....

my 85 gets a consistant 22-24 mpg. Lead foot or feather foot seems to make no difference.

A 90s MB diesel will also push you well over the 30 mpg mark.

Hey,
I get 20 mpg but I think there is a problem with either the injection pump timing or the injectors themselves.
I was considering having the injectors rebuilt and tested but after reading some of the horror stories here about rebuilds I think I may just buy new ones. It will only cost a little more per injector.

Also, I used Power Service addative for the first time this week. I swear my car loves it. Makes you wonder about the quality of diesel fuel that's being sold these days.
