Pulling OBD codes

Somewhere I read ( I think ) if I'm not mistaken you can possibly get OBDII Codes thrown to display on the LCD in the W210. Is this true or more of the South end of a north facing bull?

You can get codes pertaining to the climate control system displayed on the LCD display of the climate control system but not regular OBD-II system codes. For that you need a regular code reader.

You can buy a basic OBD-II reader for under $25 on Amazon. Fits easily under the seat so you always have it handy.

I just bought (still don't have it, it's on a slow boat from China) a small bluetooth OBD interface that I can tie into an app on my android phone (works with other BT-enabled mobile devices). You can find them in all kinds of price ranges, mine was like $18 with shipping on a traditional auction. At any rate, it does all kinds of stuff, including pulling down live data like fuel trim, etc. If you already have the device, apps are dirt cheap ($5) so you can have a very powerful OBD-II scan tool for under $30.

After I get it and have some time, I'll do a write-up on it.

Good luck.

As others have mentioned, you can purchase a standard code reader for under $50 dollars. In my case, I went with a scanguage, that is connected to the OBD port full time. I have it mounted on the steering wheel post, and it sits just below the cluster. Using velcro to hold it in place, it makes for easy removal if you want to move it to another vehicle. The nice part about the scanguage is the fact that it gives you real time numbers regarding fuel economy, voltage, water temp, and a host of other vital stats. It will read and clear codes as well.

I bought a Bluetooth plug off of eBay for about $17. It connects to my phone wirelessly and I run the free app version of Torque on it. I can read codes and get some live data.

I've had a Scangauge on the wife's '96 E300D for the last several years. It works great and its place on the steering wheel post, as the Pimp says, means it is always visible, always available. The Bluetooth models are nice because they're wireless but I don't believe they reset codes.

The BT one I bought from ebay was the "mini" which is small enough to leave in place (on the recommendation of another member on another MB forum); pic below.

Aquaticedge, I have a scanguage, but if you have the mobile device the BT setup will do more, and for a lot less money, and you won't have a cable you have to run around the interior and then find a place to mount the scanguage.

My phone is not blue tooth compatible so that one wont work for me I'm afraid. I know they make an OBD reader for the iPhone though

If you're leaning towards the scanguage, two things.

One, while the scanguage will provide lots of information, it's not quite as detailed for DTC use as even a basic reader like this one, which is just over $20 at Amazon, though you'll need to buy something else to get free shipping.

Two, if you really are leaning towards a scanguage, once I get my BT setup running I can be convinced to part with mine.

If your computer has bluetooth that would work as well (assuming you can download the proper app to it).

Can't know- That is similar to the one I have. For anyone interested, search ELM 327 on fleebay to find them.

Jeremy- Yes, they do reset codes. I was planning on getting an android tablet with a mount to see it more visibly but for now my phone works fine.

Isn't there also a special MB code reader that plugs in under the hood for these cars or did they abandon that and just go with the standard ODB-II ? If there are special MB codes, when is it necessary to have to have one and will it also read the ODB-II codes?

Thanks
