E300D oil seeping around oil filler cap

Been trying to solve this issue for awhile. I've got oil seeping out around the oil filler cap and making a mess of the front of the engine. I've replaced the car, replaced the rubber gasket and tried to bend the tabs to make it fit more snugly. Anyone else with this issue? Any fixes I haven't thought of?

have you checked the blowby breather system - if that is blocked you will have all sorts of leaks

Good suggestion. Where does that system run? Is it the rubber/plastic tube that runs along the passenger side of the head? If so, I just replaced the rubber elbow and had the long plastic tube off to do it and everything seemed okay and free flowing.

Hi Len,

I know you've had MB's for a few years, so you probably already know this, but don't leave the oil cap upside down when you take it off. The oil migrates around the gasket, and then leaks out and makes a mess when you put it back in place. I always have a rag ready to place the cap right-side up when I take it off.

...are you running it on anything other than diesel? WVO has a tendency to gum up the rings and increase blowby in the 606.962 engine (but not so much in the non-turbo version)...

Thanks for the reply guys. Running diesel only. I do set the cap upside down often, but I also at least try to clean it up when I see it all oiled up. Have also removed the O-ring and cleaned everything up that way too - still the same seepage. I've got a highway run today. I'll try to get the cap all cleaned up before then and see what happens.

So that's the secret!

I always treat those gaskets as single use. Every time I remove the cap I thought that I had to replace the gasket because it would leak afterwards unless I used a new one.

naw... the secret is to ALWAYS wash off the cap with Brake cleaner when you take it off... and dry out the fill area.

Look for a hair line crack in the aluminum. I have had two covers develop cracks over time.
Till I found the cracks I did everything to the cap you are doing now.

Did a 200 mile highway run yesterday. No mess yet, but I see a little bit of oil pooling up under the cap in the front. Looks like it's only a matter of time before it leaks a bit again. Have to look for a crack - thanks for the tip.

Are you using the plastic cap or the metal cap? I had a plastic cap and it would seep some oil.

I haven`t had any problems with the metal cap. X2 by placing it on a rag, right side up. I give it a twist or two on the rag to wipe off the oil, then wipe off the oil around the VC opening.

Never hear of replacing the oil cap gasket every time it is removed.
always something new.

You're a genious!

I did exactly this and no leaks after a 100 mile trip.

Kudos!
