Are your side mirrors ALSO magnifying?

Hi,
The passenger side mirror of my 1983 300D MAGNIFIES. Does anyone know why the designed it to do this. It's strange how with my car, objects in the mirrors are farther than they appear. I guess I can assume that all your cars are the same way. Has anyone changed the mirror glass to the way it should be? I'd like to get rid of this off feature because eventhough I suppose the mirror works, it's an odd feeling. Thanks.

Alex

I think the mirrors magnify to give an illusion of speed when all 123 horses of power whisks you from traffic... But I thought the saying goes "Objects in the rear view appear closer than they are." Hense, magnifying?

I think it's the convex shape that gives you a wider viewing area. object appears in the middle will be bigger and closer.

But in all my other cars, objects in the mirrors are closer than they appear, not farther than they appear (as with my magnifying mirrors). Oh well, I'll just live with it.

I have never heard of a mirror which magnifies the image!!!

I have the flat one on the right, and have had to stick on a convex on the top of it. doesn't look great, but I have been a bus driver for 30 some years, and can't change lanes without it!

The only thing I can think of with your mirror, is that it was replaced with an inferior flat mirror which was warped in.
This is called concave, as compared to a convex.

You can order new glass from many sources.

I think you have a Euro mirror which is pretty much a drivers side mirror slapped on the passenger side.

I ordered a Mirror from Donkey which has the same "feature" after about a week of fiddling with it I decided that the side mirror was more of a novelity and the rear view mirror works great.

You are correct. The mirrors make the images larger. Which is what I don't want. The larger the images, the less that can be seen in the mirror space right?

I found some mirror glass at FastLane and while it's expensive, I think it's worth it. How do I get the mirror unit and or glass off for replacement? Thanks

I don't think it actually enlarges what you see. I think that since your use to the DOT style mirrors you think that it is. If you try long enough you'll get the mirror set right so as to work for you. But I guess if it's a real problem that you could put a new mirror piece in.

I can get it to work ok I guess. It's just a personal preference that it be like the DOT convex mirrors.

is the mirror half full or half empty.......???

D HEAD< I believe the mirror replacement just sets ontop of the
original. Adhesive unknown to me.

My w123 rt mirror does not have the "statement"
ritten on it but it works fine when adjusted correctly.
There is no better thing than neck exercise when you turn your head to double check.

Ideally, you won't have any blind spots in a car.

Hopefully, everyone should have a convex mirror on the right, and a wedge mirror on the left.
Wedge mirrors are very helpful to see the left blind spot without cracking your neck before lane-changing to the left.
I will try to get some pictures tomorrow.

If you have a flat mirror, or the elusive magnifying mirror:p , you should stick on a convex mirror on top!
