So I have been gone for about a week.
I decided to work with the idle and damper first, then look at the injectors. Turning up the idle seemed to settle out the idle. The damper is adjusted pretty far in. I took a long ride today. For the time that I was on the back roads (50 mph or less) all was good, then I got on the highway at 65. As soon as I got of the highway, the rocking began. Was running diesel. Was wondering, is it possible that the springs in a injector heats up and become softer? When I test the injectors they are always cold. |

Yes, metal changes characteristics with temperature, but the springs inside the injectors are immersed in fuel, and spring tension shouldn't change significantly with the kinds of temperature swings that the diesel fuel should be seeing. What's far more likely to change with those temperature deltas is tolerances -- parts fitting together tighter or looser.
However, I don't think your problem is injectors or even with the cylinders themselves. You've replaced injectors, tested the cylinders, and the problem isn't specific to any one. I'd look for something common to all of them. Have you checked the fuel pressure valve on the IP and the lift pump? Maybe the pressure valve is sticking open, or the lift pump isn't generating sufficient pressure at idle. Warm fuel is less viscous and could explain why you're not getting sufficient pressure inside the IP at idle.

Here is a follow up on this problem.
I have been away for a while but got to work on this last night. Took the car out for a fast drive to get it rocking and it was rocking good. Got back to the house left it running, got may hand down in the hot engine and tightened the damper bolt 1/4 turn. And to my amazement, then engine settled down and began purring. I would not believe it if I did not see it myself. Thanks for all the suggestions!! |
