Hylomar Universal Blue

Does any one here have any experience with this sealant?
It has been recommended to me for sealing problem gaskets, even head gaskets.
Its based on a similar product used in RR aircraft engines.
the specs look good.

Hylomar is popular with the Land Rover crowd. I've tried it and I hate it.

It goes on OK, but will not come off...even acetone won't cut it...and it leaks as well. Can't think of a worse sealer. I use Aviation Permatex, it always seals perfectly and cleans up with rubbing alcohol.

This may become like an oil thread. Lots of different opinions...

Harley Davidson used it when they introduced the Evolution engine. I used it for a long time, and never had any problems- didn't have the same experience that cuban8 had either. That being said, I used Curil T on my OM603 rebuild. Very popular with the Porsche crowd for sealing case halves.

I have used Hylomar and generally really like it. It's somewhat similar to using RTV, except it doesn't really harden. It is actually very hard to find in the US now( due to a licensing issue, IIRC) - I have a bit left over from 20 years ago ( yep, doesn't harden and go bad in the tube like stupid RTV) that I am saving for an engine rebuild, but I recently saw a small tube of it at Pep Boys for $10 so perhaps it is making a comeback. The closest thing commonly available is Permatex 2B, which is a sticky miserable brown paste. I like Avaiation Permatex, too, but it's really not used the same way, IMO.

I have used it and it is a great sealant. Never could find a tube in the US, going to get some shipped from across the pond.

Use Toyota "black" sealant and be done with it for life. The best sealer ever made. Truth.

^^ I googled toyota black and got this Toyota forum, where many of those guys seem to like Hylomar as much as anything.

What seal packing (gasket material) do you prefer - YotaTech Forums

Toyota Black seems to be RTV, which I try to avoid like the plague. Has a nasty habit of magically appearing in your oil pump pickup screen.

Napa can get it. Something on a Mercedes injection pump called for it so I have a tube in my tool box.

Funny, admittedly part of the Land Rover crowd and I love the stuff. It's self repairing and you don't have to wait to cure then retorque like standard RTV, just torque and go.

Hit up any mess you make with mineral spirits quickly or, as mentioned above it can be tough to remove.

I also like Locktite 5900 and it may be easier to find. Also the Hylomar 607 is less messy then the universal blue but quite difficult to find. Permatex is the US outlet for Hylomar and the blue is available at pep boys.

Thanks for the comments so far.
It was recommended to me for use on some joints on my earth moving equipment.
The self healing property is very important because of the extream stresses that occur.

Its great to have those who have used it share their experiences.

Definitely not an "oil thread".

This could be a business opportunity for you if you can find it in larger tubes there (80ml) for cheap. We Yanks are getting screwed (35 ml for $10).

john deere uses hylomar selant to seal up there 4024 engines, it's white in color and is like a thin rtv and will run if u get to much on. they seal the timing gear cover, oil pan, rocker cover and misc other stuff with it. it. does leak from time to time, but it depends on waht your sealing and if u prep it correctley. i can get u a part number for it and is available thru any jd dealer.
