Fuel filter confusion
'87 300SDL - what is this small filter? Its under the air filter, and a hose next to it is plugged. Not going to mess with it because car runs ;-> Also, what I that round module it's connected to...
I know, I know, I should read up on it... So don't flame me too bad. Still wrapping my mind around the whole diesel thing. But lovin every minute of it *singing*

I'm not familiar with the SDL but it looks like that is an air/vacuum filter in the EGR plumbing.

Yes. On the left side of the engine will be the normal pre (clear) and main (canister) filter--for FUEL. Added later was the cheezy oil-coalescing filter for the EGR system. Don't ask in this thread, but research on thine own--about alternatives to this filter and/or "options" for the EGR system.

the shutoff diaphragm is known to rupture and dump oil into the cabin... Booster, etc... the "filter" is really just a clear spot in the vacuum system to allow a heads up that it has occured prior to gobs of oil dumping onto your pants...

Answer
It is an air filter, and diagnostic tool/protective device.
You can look at it to see if the vacuum system is drawing engine oil in. Here is another application of the same function. "Hens tooth" 1985 300D vacuum filter dark black . |

Ok, mine was on the line from the vac transducer/ exhaust gas recirculation valve.
Should I put one on the shut-off valve line also?

MB didn't think that line needs a filter.

Since I'm disabling the EGR and AVR I'm moving it to the shutoff line.
Of course, AFTER I diagnose and fix my present vac problem (separate post). I now have my own Mityvac ;->

MB also wants you to pay them to diagnose your problems and buy all your parts from the Dealer and have them installed by their Mechanics; and no expense should be spared to do that.

I believe that's part of their "spare no wallet" engineering strategy ;->
