yet another timing chain and scared owner

I have searched around and read up on timing chains. I do feel my issue is slightly different and hasn't been addressed. Here goes

With the new chain and tensioner installed and injector removed I manually rotate the flywheel clockwise until the crank timing mark is on 0T. The cam chain mark is just a tad behind. If I make the camshaft mark line up, the the crank is approx 15 degrees past TDC.

I have read that the solution is to bunch up the chain on the IP side and try to skip it over the cam sprocket. I am unable to do this. At this point the chain tensioner is removed when I do this. However, in my attempt to rotate the camshaft only in a clock wise direction the timing marks magically line up right where they are supposed to be.

Is this wrong? I will post pictures if possible, I am had to re-set up my account here. I have been around for a little while. I read GSXR's thread on emission recirc removal and did so, ALDA removal.

the first is TDC. The second picture is the camshaft when the engine is at tdc.

Again, when I wrench the camshaft (minus the chain tensioner) clockwise to bunch up the chain and "skip" a tooth on the cam sprocket the timing marks seem to line up.

When I manually turn the motor with the tensioner the cam shaft is off timing.

I'm a little nervous. Thanks

It might be a good idea to post what Engine you are working on.

Timing marker check

I'm not so sure that the timing marker that is utilized to reference with degree marks is placed correctly. May give you a false reading.

When cleaning in that area some time ago I found that the bolt that holds it was loose and I inadvertanly moved the marker device. It actually has a slot in it where it can slide on the fastner bolt and move some ten degrees.

Just keep that in mind!

Looks like an OM601 possibly.....a very neglected one based on the oil slime/varnish on that cam lobe. Looks to not have been run in a while!
