69 W115 oil pan drain plug question

Went to change the oil for the first time in my 69 220D and was delighted to find that I need to buy yet another tool The drain plug takes a hex bit socket attachment, which unfortunately is bigger than anything I can find locally... So can anyone tell my what size I need so I can order it from the internet?

I believe my 68 220D has a standard oil plug bolt, not a hex bit. But I just bought a set of hex bits (for the diff fluid) and am headed outside to work on the car in a few minutes. So I will check to see if my recollection is wrong, and if so, I will get back to you later tonight.

Our oil plugs are different. I do not have a hex drive plug, so I cannot help regarding the exact size. But I recently bought a 9 piece metric hex bit set from Harbor Freight for ~$10, which would almost certainly cover your needs. Obviously these are not the fanciest tools in the world, but for occasional usage, they seem entirely adequate. Good luck.

Edits somewhat later...
It is 14mm. Search for part 1309970032 in Fastlane to see a photo.

Here is a description of the 14mm plug from another site to help you figure out if this is the same as what your car has:
Oil Drain Plug; Early Version; 26mm Diameter for 14mm Allen Wrench
Please verify appearance/size of existing drain plug prior to ordering. Later version is much smaller and replacement pan may have other version plug. Also need 007603-026304 seal washer.

I have one of those tools and if I remember correctly it has 14mm Hex on it.
In the past when I did not have large sized Allen Wrenches I have used Rod Couplings and a rebgular Socket.

The tool you are speaking of is often on eBay; it has a Hex on each end. They often sell for around $16+ shipping but I have seen them go as high as $20-$30 range.
Once in a while they go really Cheap.
There is also a similar tool that has a Hex on one end ahd a Box on the other.
Dowidat and Heyco; Gadore. Also the part numbers on them sometimes do not reference to the Mercedes part.

The last pic is 2 Wrenches that sold on eBay for $150; that was way too much. One is Dowidat and the other a Gadore. I bet someone is having Buyers Remorse.

Many years ago, when I was driving my W114 250, I got one of those special wrenches from the dealer. I believe it was a Dowidat, with a 14 MM allen and (I think) a 17 mm box on the other end for the filter canister. Price was around $20.
On some of these cars, (including my 250) the oil-drain is so close to the crossmember, a regular ratchet-driven allen bit won't work.
In a pinch, if you don't have the special wrench or allen-bit, you may be able to get a 3/8" coupling-nut from Home Depot or a Sears Hardware Center.
The coupling-nut I refer to is an elongated nut used to attach two 3/8' diameter bolts or sections of all-thread together and fits a 9/16 wrench.
(You should verify the wrench-size, as I have found some 3/8 coupling-nuts that actually fit a 5/8 wrench!)
The coupling-nut will fit in the allen drain-plug, with enough sticking out to grip with a 14mm or 9/16 box-end wrench. (And hopefully the last guy to change your oil didn't tighten the plug with a 4-foot pipe or impact-gun!)

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks for the great info gents. Ended up finding a metric hex nut set at Harbour Freight, and using a box wrench on the business end of the socket inserted into the drain plug, as there was not enough room to fir a wrench in there. Think I will be returning the set to Harbour Freight and looking for the wrench
