His First Ride In The SD

My newborn son, Silas, had his first ride today. I am proud to say it was in the SD. It could be just me feeling sentimental, but I think he's hooked on diesel. And, of course my wife thinks I am crazy for saying so. Perhaps she's on to something

Congrats!

My son's first ride home was in my 84 300D. We found that the sound of the I5 diesel would put him to sleep when everything else wouldn't. No seriously, taking him for rides around the neighborhood in my wife's 2001 Passat wouldn't do a thing. But once he was in the 300D it would only take a few minutes and he'd be out.

It's the only time in my life I was thankful for having an unadjusted rack damper bolt.

Mach, congratulations on your new son. sounds like he is getting started on the right foot.

My Daughter (still) takes the 3 yr old on a drive for her afternoon nap. says it is the only way to get her to sleep. but this is in her 94 Ford Wagon. I asked her when she is going to quit? when she is 40?

OH, I heard Diesel is great for diaper rash.

I can attest to the sleep-inducing powers of a Mercedes Diesel. I fell asleep plenty of times riding in the back of my dad's 240D.

I think everyone is in denial.

Don't get me wrong. I like diesel but ...

1) Diesel cars are noisy, smelly.
2) Old diesels are even more so.
3) A lot of the time A/C is kaput, window cannot roll dn/up.
4) Assuming the OP's old SD diesel is a 87, that makes it 25 years old. When your kid is able to drive at 16 the car would be 41 years old. I doubt any kids 16 years from now would drive a 41 years old car. Technology would have moved on.

It is plausible that the old worn out suspension acts as a rocker. They all like being rocked, don't they?

1) I happen to like the sound of a diesel and never thought they smelled bad (both the 240D and the Sprinter, which the Sprinter is much quieter).
2) Yea my dad's 240D may be old, and a bit loud but again I love the sound and it honestly smells great. It smells like leather.
3) AC dies all the time in an old Mercedes (not in the Sprinter though, as we have had no problems with it). Power windows might die too, but I wouldn't know since my dad's 240D has manual windows.
4) You never know. Some of my friends want to drive cars from the 60s, and some of these guys are very knowledgeable car enthusiasts that like the idea of simple mechanics and unique styling. I wouldn't want to drive a cheap new car (what teenagers drive) today since most of them are poorly built and don't have any character. When I get my license and drive the 240D to school, people will think it is a cool car, partially cause of its looks, partially cause it is a Mercedes, and partially cause of it being obnoxiously loud.

New-born son . . .

Don't worry until he starts asking for the keys.

1) True. That's why I LOVE 'em. It pisses the neighbors off at 5 a.m.
2) Correct again. That's why I love old ones over newer gasoline sounding wannabes. Simpler mechanical injection will be louder than the newer electronic diesels
3) R12 factory A/C blowing snow for the last 3 years, so not an issue...yet
4) The SD in the OP is an 85. It has been driven by my eldest child already. BUT, Bing! again. It will prolly be sent in a scrap metal bale to China within the next 16 years

Hey, don't be cracking on the ride quality. Its the best highway vehicle I have ever owned

why are you posting on this thread?

2) Old diesels are even more so. only if not maintained...

4) Assuming the OP's old SD diesel is a 87, that makes it 25 years old. um... there's no such thing as an 87 SD... When your kid is able to drive at 16 the car would be 41 years old. I doubt any kids 16 years from now would drive a 41 years old car. Technology would have moved on. a great many drivers FAR prefer classic to trendy/modern... I enjoy driving my 45 year old camaro... and my 81 year old Model A... along with my 45 year old pickup...
I'll also be so bold as to GUARANTEE ANY 16 year old boy would enjoy driving my 45 year old Camaro

It is plausible that the old worn out suspension acts as a rocker. They all like being rocked, don't they?
... it's more likely the engine pulses are comforting the child... worn suspension would be unsafe for a child or an adult to be driving in, and would be repaired I'm sure...

I am posting because these are facts for old diesel. If you beg to differ then we can all agree to disagree. Enough said.

This thread title went right over your head, it is a proud new father boasting about his child, the car is in good condition and coincidental.

Diesel engine noise is good.

FYI Babies like white noise and motion for relaxing - sleeping:
* A running vacuum cleaner.
* A train ride.
* The rumble + motion of a car ride.
