Does the Windshield Washer tubing need to be anything special?

Hi guys,

Was looking over the 240D today prior to taking it on a road trip, and noticed that the windshield washer tubing had a hole in it from being pinched by the hood hinge. It was pretty ratty looking and needed to be replaced anyway. I decided to replace all the tubing.

I called a couple of parts places, NAPA and Autozone, and neither of them had any tubing 'specifically' for the windshield washer system. NAPA said that they just used rubber tubing (i.e. black rubber tubing).

I decided to pick up 5/16" ID vinyl tubing from Home Depot. It was a tight fit, I used a hair dryer to heat and soften the ends before placing the on the little nipples. I zip-tied them all into place.

So, the question is - will the Home Depot vinyl tubing work OK, or is there some special design specification that would cause it to fail or not work properly in this application?

If I do need something special, where can I get it?

Thanks,

PE

Some of the more optioned cars have an electrical heater line the runs along the tubing wall. My 1985 300SD does not, my 1990 W124s do. Mine pinched on the 300SD as well. A dealer to which I had taken the car for safety inspection quoted $250 to replace it!!! I just stuck a larger vacuum tube connector in the middle of the split and problem solved.

From the lack of responses, I'm assuming that common vinyl tubing is going to work here.

Comments?

Sincerely,

PE
