Italian tune up?
what is an italian tune up?
i am guessing it is stomping on the acclerator and running up the rpms/mph high here is my main question do i just need to stomp on it from 30-40mph and run it fast and hard up to 80mph or do i need to run it from 40mph up to 80-100mph and keep it there for a few minutes if trying to stomp on it some with my 99 e300 on the interstate, if i let the car coast down to 45-50mph and then stomp on the gas it is at 100mph in no time, a few seconds then i am off the gas and coasting back down and wondering if this may be defeating the purpose somewhat

Climbing a mountain at full load usually does the trick. That means that maximum fuel is injected, so that the temperature is raised. That burns away carbon deposits.

If you don't have a mountain, then sustained highway speeds, as opposed to stop and go driving, will perform an Italian Tuneup given time.
![]() Quality fuel and some additives can also help get rid of the carbon buildup.

I reckon by the time we've driven to the mountains an Italian tune up probably wouldn't be necessary anymore!

Yes the speed limit was definitely messing me up for doing this tune up!
I will work on climbing some mountains with it It just seems to have quite a bit of power and not much taxes it

The best Polish or Italian tune-up is subtler than that:
You don't want to do a full throttle acceleration run or a top speed run, which will often burn the fouling permanently into the spark plug insulators or injection pre-chambers, but rather, take the car up to high revs relatively gently and hold it at the high rev rate for some miles so that the high revs and maximum air/fuel flow will scrub things out.
